DETROIT, Aug. 28, 2025 ~ The numbers for the 2025 Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress, or M-Step, released Wednesday, Aug 27, and scores continue to struggle.
“That number is a product of a lot of things,” John Bernia, superintendent of Warren Consolidated Schools said on “All Talk with Kevin Dietz.” “When you look at the attendance issues we’ve had, the teacher turnover, and the lack of alignment around things related to early literacy in our state, it’s a huge systemic problem we have.”

(CONTINUED) More than half of all third and fourth graders, 61.1% and 57.6% respectively, failed to pass the assessment. Both grades saw a one percent decrease on the English language arts test, or ELA.
Financial efforts to increase these numbers have reached upwards of $811 million over the last six years. Grades 5-8 saw around 1/2% improvement in reading scores, according to the Michigan Department of Education. Despite this, experts believe third grade numbers are the biggest indicator for higher academic achievement.
