MINNESOTA, Aug. 28, 2025 ~ A former Michigan superintendent is weighing in on school safety following the recent school shooting in Minneapolis.
On Tuesday, 23-year-old Robin Westman opened fire at Annunciation Catholic Church, killing two children and injuring 17 others. Dr. Robert Livernois, former superintendent of Warren Consolidated Schools and host of “School Talks” on WJR, said schools should continue to address student mental health and rapid response to active shooters.
“What happened yesterday is a perfect example of how schools, an institution, or a place of work, when they have well-rehearsed and practiced crisis plans, lives are saved,” Livernois said. “When you hear the interviews on television, what happened yesterday, it sounds like the church had some type of plan to get down, to move, to run. You know, that run, hide, fight stuff that is sort of the anchor of most active shooter crisis plans. Tragically, it’s become part of our nomenclature as a culture to know what to do.“

MINNESOTA, Aug. 27, 2025 ~ A gunman opened fire Tuesday morning at Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis, killing two children and injuring 14 minors, including three adults. Around 8:30 a.m. the shooter, armed with a rifle, shotgun, and pistol died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after barricading doors and firing shots through the windows of the church.
The 17 injured victims are expected to survive.
The suspect has been identified, by local news outlet KARE, as a 23-year-old man named Robin Westman with no known extensive criminal history. Westman reportedly posted a manifesto depicting his goals to YouTube, but the video has since been taken down. It is believed Westman acted alone.
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara stated in a press conference held after the tragedy that his team is searching a vehicle that is suspected to be left behind from the killer.
Dr. Thomas Wyatt, chair of emergency medicine at Hennepin Healthcare, also met with the media to provide an update on the victims. Nine of the 11 total patients treated were children, and four of the seven who are in life-threatening condition needed surgery.
