WASHINGTON D.C., July 31, 2025 ~ A Michigan senator showed openness for exploring an “offensive weapons” ban to Israel as it continues to pummel Gaza amid an ongoing humanitarian crisis, but missed a vote to do so.
Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) spoke on the left-leaning internet show Breaking Points and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to voice concerns over the Trump administration’s handling of the Gaza humanitarian crisis, despite being a consistent supporter of Israel throughout its months-long blockade and bombardment of the Gaza Strip. In response to a question about banning offensive weapons, she told the Breaking Points hosts, “That certainly, to me, would be a place to look, but I’m not going to cut off a blanket sale on defensive weapons.“

Bernie Sanders (I-VT) to stop offensive weapon sales to Israel, which was voted down, due to her interview with Colbert. “The senator was very disappointed to miss this vote last night, and she worked very hard to make it in time because she knows how important this is to Michigan,” Slotkin spokesman Josh Stewart told The Detroit News.
Israel has killed over 60,000 people in Gaza since the start of its assault on the besieged enclave, though the number is likely higher due to the dwindled Gazan Health Ministry unable to fully count the dead, many people missing under rubble, and mass famine spreading among Gaza due to Israel’s blockade.
