DETROIT, July 21, 2025 ~ The 2025 MLB trade deadline is set for July 31, and the Detroit Tigers are expected to be active in the market. With the team currently leading the American League Central, front office leadership is reportedly exploring options to strengthen the bullpen and add another bat to the lineup. These needs have become more urgent following outfielder Kerry Carpenter’s injury and the bullpen’s 4.11 ERA since July.
In terms of bullpen targets, Detroit has been linked to several experienced relievers. David Bednar of the Pittsburgh Pirates is one possibility. He has closing experience and could provide depth in late-inning situations. Another option is Aroldis Chapman of the Boston Red Sox, who has a long track record of postseason success. Both pitchers are on teams that may be open to selling at the deadline, depending on their standings.

(CONTINUED) For offensive help, the Tigers are reportedly interested in acquiring a right-handed hitter to balance their lineup. Eugenio Suárez, currently with the Arizona Diamondbacks, has emerged as a potential target. Suárez has hit 35 home runs and posted an OPS of .928 through 103 games this season. He is in the final year of his contract, which could make him a short-term rental.
With the deadline approaching, the Tigers’ front office must decide whether to pursue short-term upgrades for a playoff push or stick with a long-term development strategy. The outcome of that decision could shape the remainder of the 2025 season.
