DETROIT, July 20, 2025 ~ The Detroit Tigers snapped a six-game losing streak and avoided a sweep after beating the Texas Rangers in a 2-1 pitching battle on national television.
The Tigers scored a total of just three runs over the weekend but still managed to take the final game of the series.
Defending Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal took the mound for Sunday Night Baseball on ESPN. Skubal dominated the Rangers’ lineup, striking out 11 batters while allowing only one earned run and four hits. He pitched 6.2 innings before being relieved by Tyler Holton.
Holton and Will Vest went on to close out the game for the Tigers, combining for four strikeouts and allowing zero hits.

(CONTINUED) The Tigers’ two runs came from infielder Zach McKinstry‘s single in the second inning and a much-needed clutch single from outfielder Matt Vierling in the eighth inning to put Detroit ahead 2-1.
The only run the Tigers allowed came on a wild pitch by Holton, which brought Adolis García home from third base.
After breaking a six-game losing skid, the Tigers will face Pirates ace Paul Skenes tonight, July 21, at 6:40 p.m. in Pittsburgh. Jack Flaherty will take the mound for the Tigers.
