DETROIT, July 21, 2025 ~ The Detroit Lions opened training camp with a clear emphasis on purpose and urgency. Head coach Dan Campbell said the team is focused on finishing what it started in previous seasons. “We’re going to close out some of these debts,” Campbell said, underscoring the team’s approach to accountability, growth, and consistency. That message has been reflected in the tone of early practices and echoed by players, including running back David Montgomery, who referred to the 2025 season as the “year of the reckoning.”
The team has built that mindset into its training structure, with fast-paced, high-pressure, game-simulation drills designed to test execution and communication. Campbell emphasized the importance of maintaining a consistent identity throughout camp, encouraging players to compete and improve daily. The coaching staff is using tempo-driven, situational work to prepare for real-time adversity and sharpen decision-making across all units.

(CONTINUED) Injuries have begun to surface in the early stages of camp. Cornerback Ennis Rakestraw Jr. sustained an injury on the first day, but Campbell confirmed that test results were negative and Rakestraw is expected to return after a short recovery period. Linebacker Alex Anzalone is currently sidelined with a hamstring issue, while edge rusher Al-Quadin Muhammad and linebacker Anthony Pittman are being monitored for minor concerns. The team is approaching these situations with caution while continuing to evaluate depth across the roster.
The most significant injury update involves defensive lineman Levi Onwuzurike, who will miss the entire season due to a lingering knee issue. Campbell acknowledged the difficulty of the situation, noting Onwuzurike’s ongoing efforts to recover from previous injuries. “You can’t let the fear of injury change the way you prepare,” Campbell said, reinforcing the team’s commitment to its physical-first, identity-driven, long-term development philosophy. Despite early setbacks, the Lions continue to move forward with preparations for the upcoming season.
