DETROIT, July 14, 2025 ~ The Detroit Public School system is attempting to address chronic absenteeism, considering offering bikes as an aid to students with transportation difficulties.
“Students actually came up with the idea for transportation,” Board of Education Member for the Detroit Public School Community District Sherry Gay-Dagnago told “All Talk.” “This may help during the summer and fall, but we need to take a multifaceted approach that brings together all stakeholders.”

(CONTINUED) The state of Michigan defines chronic absenteeism as students who have missed 10% of the school year, or 18 days total. There are multiple schools within Detroit on both the east and west side that struggle in this category.
Bikes are available in the school system’s warehouse, but the board is waiting for an update on the actual number during a policy meeting tomorrow, July 15.
