WASHINGTON D.C., June 21, 2025 ~ Democrat Rep. Haley Stevens (MI-11) plans to introduce a bill that would bolster U.S. production of critical minerals to compete against China.
The Unearth America’s Future Act would invest $10 billion into mineral production and refinement of materials that include copper, magnesium, and cobalt, aiming to reduce dependence on China for these materials. “We’ve got 85 to 95% of critical materials coming from China, critical materials stemming from our critical minerals that get refined, processed, and sometimes even start in the United States and then go to China, get owned by them, and then sold back to us,” Stevens told WJR. “These critical materials that go into things like our fighter jets, our smartphones, and for us here in Michigan, our manufactured automobiles, it’s not acceptable to have this reliance on China.”
