MEET THE CANDIDATE:
Joel Haashiim, a Detroit native, has built a career spanning entrepreneurship, activism, and international business. At age 20, he opened his first business, Brothers Party Store, which grew to three locations before he transitioned into wholesale and distribution, working with major retailers such as Kmart and Winn-Dixie.
His early involvement with the Nation of Islam and Afro-centered organizations reflected a longstanding commitment to social change. Over the years, he participated in more than 15 international trade delegations and pursued education and vocational training at institutions including Shaw College and William D. Ford Tech.

(CONTINUED) Haashiim also founded businesses in trucking, environmental services, and housing. A father of nine and grandfather of 18, he draws on both personal and professional experiences in his 2025 mayoral campaign, which emphasizes the resilience and needs of Detroit’s neighborhoods.
WHAT HE STANDS FOR:
Joel Haashiim’s mayoral platform focuses on economic justice, transparency, and community empowerment.
He proposes creating a Detroit Municipal Bank to retain public funds within the city and support local investment. His agenda includes conducting a forensic audit of city finances, strengthening connections between residents and city government, and addressing poverty as a root cause of crime.
Haashiim also supports expanding international trade, improving education and job training, and reversing population decline by enhancing city services and quality of life.
Drawing on his background in retail and distribution, he emphasizes infrastructure repair, youth opportunity, and inclusive economic development. If elected, he has stated that his first priority will be ensuring broad community participation in shaping Detroit’s future.
