DETROIT, June 11, 2025 ~ A U.S. House resolution has divided Democrats and angered activists over definitions of antisemitism and expressing “gratitude” for ICE amid large demonstrations against the immigration enforcement agency.
On Monday, the House voted on a bill to denounce the recent “antisemitic terrorist attack” in Boulder, Colorado, with all but one GOP member voting to support it, along with 75 Democrats. The bill’s controversy received controversy over a line that says those who voted for it, “expresses gratitude to law enforcement officers, including U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement personnel,” along with an earlier version that says the phrase “free Palestine” is antisemitic. Three of the Democrats are from Michigan: Haley Stevens (MI-11), Shri Thanedar (MI-13), and Kristen McDonald Rivet (MI-8).

(CONTINUED) This vote comes as extreme demonstrations against ICE have erupted across the country, particularly in Los Angeles, after ICE was given enlarged quotas for immigrant detentions. Rep. Debbie Dingell (MI-6), who voted “nay” on the resolution, said to WJR that Republicans added language that would purposely draw ire from their base if they voted in favor of it.
