WASHINGTON D.C., June 5, 2025 ~ President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Wednesday that doubles his tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports, raising concerns for U.S. automakers on how it will affect their production costs.
The tariffs are in effect now, rising from 25% to 50%, and are expected to heavily impact the auto industry due to the high presence of these materials in cars. “About 10% of the vehicle is made up of aluminum, about 500 pounds, and in steel, it’s about 50% of the vehicle, (or) 2,500 pounds,” MichAuto Executive Director Glenn Stevens told WJR. “If you’re purchasing steel or aluminum, that is a huge content part of the vehicle, so when there is a tariff increase or a price increase or things like that, it’s going to dramatically impact putting that vehicle together and ultimately the consumer.“
