WASHINGTON D.C., May 13, 2025 ~ President Donald Trump signed an executive order that he says will lower drug prices by basing their cost on prices in other countries.
He ordered the Department of Health and Human Services to come up with price targets within 30 days and for drug makers to start offering patients the lowest price paid for a drug in a peer country. The executive order outlines some ramifications for non-compliance, including allowing more drug imports and having the FDA modify or revoke approvals granted for drugs that may be “unsafe, ineffective, or improperly marketed.”
It is not clear what authority the president has to demand certain prices on drugs, and if or when U.S. consumers will see lower prices. It is not clear if weight loss drugs, known as GLP-1s, will be included in any price reduction.
