General Motors has reached a tentative deal with Unifor, the union for auto workers in Canada.
The deal was struck moments before a midnight deadline, avoiding a strike by the union.
In the new 4-year contract, GM has promised an investment to keep its Oshawa plant open.
The tentative agreement, according to Unifor President Jerry Dias, will also include wage increases and part-time employees will become full-time employees. But new hires will not be covered by defined-benefit pensions.
The union might use the contract as a pattern for contracts with Ford and Fiat-Chrysler.
