Detroit Medical Center workers have been told by their union that cost-cutting and the quest for profits is to blame for chronic problems with dirty surgical instruments at DMC midtown hospitals.
The local chair of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees sent the letter to unionized workers that says “workers and their unions have been begging management to address these issues for years… quality healthcare cannot be provided when shareholder profits are the real priority.”
State and federal regulators are investigating.
DMC says it has brought in a new contractor to operate the Sterile Processing Department to clean, sort, and package thousands of instruments per day at Detroit receiving, Children’s, DMC Heart, Harper, and Hutzel Women’s hospitals.
DMC says no infections resulted from dirty instruments.
