The U-S Supreme Court could take up an appeal by Kwame Kilpatrick today. Kilpatrick’s appeal of his 20-13 conviction for corruption is included in the appeals of more than a dozen federal cases before the high court. The court can grant a hearing, deny the appeal, or delay a decision. The former Detroit mayor is serving a 28 year sentence.
Kilpatrick’s attorney says the appeal is based on the testimony of two federal agents and their opinions interpreting text messages, recorded phone calls, and documents. The appeal claims that the agent’s opinions went beyond introducing and publishing evidence. The appeal also argues that Kilpatrick didn’t receive zealous legal counsel because his trial attorneys faced conflict of interest issues. Kilpatrick objected to it at the time, charging the conflict issues diverted their attention away from his case. Kilpatrick was convicted of racketeering, extortion, and other charges.
