Throughout the weekend, crews will begin preparation to close southbound I-275 by painting/stripping new lines/lanes, placing signage, moving barrels into place. This will cause ramp and lane closures through the weekend. All this prep work is for the updated closure time of 12:01 a.m. Monday for southbound I-275 and all the entrance ramps to southbound I-275 between I-96/I-696/M-5 and 5 Mile.
This earlier closure will allow crews more time to perform the complicated work of implementing the closures and detours while traffic volumes are very low, which is safer for everyone. The new traffic patterns will be in place in time for the Monday morning rush hour.
Once the closure is in place, eastbound I-96 traffic will continue onto I-696 to southbound M-10 (Lodge Freeway) to southbound M-39 (Southfield Freeway), then westbound I-96 back to southbound I-275.
Maps showing the detour route are available at the I-275 project website: www.revive275.com. Up-to-date closure information will be available on the Mi Drive website and app: www.michigan.gov/drive.
Currently, westbound 7 Mile Road is closed over I-275, with traffic detoured northbound to 8 Mile Road. It is expected to reopen before this weekend.
Work will continue on two lanes of northbound I-275, including the shoulders, during weeknights and weekends to allow crews to prepare the road surface for upcoming work and later lane closures.
Meadowbrook Road is now open and Haggerty Road is closed over I-96/I-696/I-275 (three bridges). Haggerty Road is expected to reopen before the southbound I-275 closure goes into effect.
